Villages in MKRNP are almost invariably situated close to the rivers on which they depend for water supply. However, the loss of ground vegetation cover had caused soil erosion and subsequently increased sediment loads in rivers. In addition, residues from fertilizers and pesticides used in agricultural activities have contributed to the deterioration of water quality.
This may have caused the fish stocks and diversity in many rivers to decrease as reported by the local communities. There are 31 species of aquatic animals in this ecosystem two of which are endemic. Nine species are of economic use to local communities.
